Indigenous cacao is Theobroma cacao species that are found in their natural state of origin. Indigenous cacao is a type of cacao that is grown-wild, in biodiversity and is harvested by the native Amerindians (Indigenous peoples) of fewer than 30 remaining areas in seven South American countries. The Indigenous peoples are the ancestral owners of the cacao genome as part of their biodiversity, in 2022 the first in-situ laboratory was started at the origin and source of the Theobroma genome.
